Getting First Book in Paperback

I finally got “We’re Finally On Our Own” on paperback, but it will still be on Kindle as well.  I am excited about it finally being in paperback.  I can wait until I get my copy of that book in my hand.

I will admit, it was a major chore making that book into paperback.  It took me five hours to make it perfect:  formatting the body writing to fit the 6″x9″ pages and making the book cover picture perfect with the right amount of dpi’s.    Even though it took me a very long time to get it perfect, I didn’t want to give up and make it possible.  I have been writing stories for a few decades, and have been serious about my writing career, and that was what made me very determined to make that novel possible.

One Of The Problems Of Being a Writer

One of the things that can cause problems while being a writer, more than one story can appear in your head at the same time.  Usually, when I am towards the end of writing one of my stories (novels), another story has popped into my head – with new characters and a new plot line.  However, this year, has been different, I had more than one story floating around in my head.  It has been very difficult completing one story quickly, because I have been either making notes/outlines for each story and working on all of them when I am not working at my regular job.

I still have two pilots I would like work on before this year is over, and a full screenplay, and two novels.  I am hoping that this summer will be a great time for me to make some writing accomplishments.

I know this spring has taken my mind to a lot of places and greeting a lot of fictional characters that are anxious to be put on paper (or on the computer).

I know time will tell when one of these stories will be finished.

More Art with Copic Markers

I have been enjoying working with the Copic markers that I have so far…  I am still practicing with shading and blending.
IMG_20170414_171624As you can see, the second flower is pretty dark.  Through my phone, it turned out dark, but it is really three nice shades of purple.

For the second photo, I did a animated/cartoon drawing of one of my characters, Sarah.  Most of the markers, I used were with the Copic markers, but I used regular markers for her hair, lips, and eyes.  Maybe when I get more markers, she will look better.

I know I did a better job with the flowers than I did with Sarah, but hopefully, things will change in the near future.

Writing Weekend

This Saturday, I didn’t make a video on YouTube, but I did work on one of my upcoming stories.  My stories are more important than my videos.  😀  Don’t get me wrong, I do like making videos and talk about writing and art, but getting my work finished is more important.  I was also working more notes and outlines to one of my stories good part of the day.

I did make a video clip talking about making Notes and Outlines before writing the actual story.  Click on the title and you can watch that video clip.

Going Back to “On Our Own”

I wrote about the making of the novel, so I can write this entry…  Like when I was 12 years old and struggling in elementary school, the characters came about.  This spring has been stressful for me and the characters were coming back into my head.  I guess I was missing them.  I decided I want to write a prequel to the story. I thought it would be fun to write how the characters met and when the colors came about.  I have already started working on the first rough draft.  I am anxious to see where it will lead.

I already know how I want some of scenes to turn out.  If you have read the original story, it will start when the Starburg sisters’ father left the girls, and they became homeless and they eventually find Robbie and the rest of the crew.

The Making of “On Our Own”

During the year of 1985, I started creating the characters from my story, “We’re Finally On Our Own”.   I was in 6th grade, and I was so ready to leave my elementary school.  I was ready to start my writing career.  One night, I was listening to the song, “On My Own” sung by Patti LaBelle and Michael McDonald.  The characters Sandra-Sue and Robbie appeared in my head.  First, I saw their looks, and eventually their personalities were coming to life.  Sandra-Sue constantly wore red dresses, and Robbie was slim, but rough…a gangster wanna-be…

More and more songs from the 1980s were creating more characters into my head.  I was also seeing their personalities.  Erik O’Donnell was Robbie’s sidekick.  He was well built with curly auburn hair.  He was stronger than Robbie.  Now, he needs a woman on his side, and I was seeing a red headed feisty young woman, Sarah…  She had a mind of her own and stubborn.  She was also into the performing arts.

Since those four characters were serious and protective of themselves, I wanted a comical character, and the young lady in yellow popped into my head.  Her skin was dark with long spiral black hair.  Rhoda was also a beauty…

Now, I felt like Robbie should have an enemy…someone who is the opposite from him.  William came about, and he was dark and smart.  To also have him linked to the comic relief character, Rhoda, I made William shorter than her.  She would follow him everywhere.

Months later, I was seeing a younger kid wearing a lot of  blue constantly following the characters.  Steve was created.  He became a true follower and a dreamer.

Weeks after that, Sandra-Sue’s younger sister, Cindy, appeared in my head.  Instead of having blue eyes, she had brown eyes.  She was also enjoying living in a homeless life more so than Sandra-Sue.

I couldn’t believe that a 12 Utah girl would come up with strong minded characters, and an urban type story.  I wanted to get the story published, but I didn’t know how.  Take note – this happened before The internet became a thing…  I found publishing companies that would allow me to self-publish, but I didn’t have that kind of money.  I would also have to sell the books myself.  I didn’t know how to do that…  I was too young, and I wasn’t a very good salesperson at the time.

Publishing

For two decades, I kept the manuscript in a storage box.  As I was getting old, I was experiencing life more, and I was able to make the plot of the story stronger.  The personalities of the characters were getting stronger:  Robbie was becoming more violent, Sarah and the Starburg sisters were getting more strong minded.  Cindy became more stubborn.  Erik was becoming smarter.  I felt that keeping the manuscript from being published right away was a good idea.  The storyline was also growing…

I was learning more about writing and publishing.  I wrote more stories and scripts.  During the late 1990s, I got involved into the internet, and found publishing companies and literary agents.  I was encouraged to write more stories, but when Amazon came about and allowed free self-publishing, I took up that advantage.  I was so happy to have my first story published and out in the public.

The Colors

While taking college classes, I learned about the meaning of colors, so I couldn’t help myself but think about those characters.  I learned that the meanings of the colors represented the personalities of each character.  I guess I subconsciously knew that when I was young.

Sandra-Sue (red):  the leader.

William (orange):  success and encouragement.

Rhoda (yellow):  full of energy.

Erik (green):  safety and hope.

Cindy (aqua):  emotional healing.

Steve (blue):  calming and sincerity.

Sarah (purple):  ambition, independence, and creativity.

Bethany (white):  innocent and purity.

Robbie (black):  strength and authority.

This story is available through the Amazon website.

Like Every Saturday (YouTube and Art)

Like every Saturdays, I made a couple of videos for YouTube.  I made a very short clip to help celebrate Cerebral Palsey National Day (Awareness).  I will post that up on one of my YouTube channels soon.  However, I did make another video showing the pages inside my sketch book.  I did some drawings of some of my story characters, and some designs with my small collection of Copic Markers.  Go ahead and watch my latest video clip.

Since I focus on making videos on YouTube talking about my writing and drawing, I didn’t have the time to fit in any of my writing.  Maybe tomorrow, but we will see.
